Clear Thinking

A clock by Marc Newson takes inspiration from the Ancient Greeks.

Renowned industrial designer Marc Newson’s fascination with mantel clocks and affinity for rounded, organic forms converge in his latest timekeeping apparatus: Klepsydra, the Greek word for the ancient clocks that measured time through the flow of water.

Rather than a liquid, though, Newson’s 33-pound crystal and aluminum creation employs roughly 2.85 million steel microballs that drive a 30-minute counter. The system involves cups that are gradually filled with the tiny silver- or gold-coated spheres.

In Northern California, the piece is available exclusively at the Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry boutique inside the Rosewood Sand Hill. $80,000 in silver, $85,000 in gold, 2825 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park
